“As we studied the book we heard
a noise from a crate beneath the desk. A meowing sound. Jillian
said it must be the kidnapped cats. For one wonderful moment I
thought I’d get Snowy back. We opened the lid a fraction. It
wasn’t cats. It was vile bat-like creatures with large bony
wings and huge mouths full of razor sharp teeth. Before we could
slam the lid shut dozens had escaped. They attacked us—snapping
at our hands and faces. One sunk its long fangs deep into my
neck and began sucking my blood. Screaming I grabbed hold of it
and pulled as hard as I could. It refused to let go. The pain
was agonizing. I became dizzy. I was about to faint. In
desperation I squeezed the horrid thing. It screeched in pain as
I tried to crush it. Then, with a piercing hiss, it released its
grip. The hideous creature squirmed about in my hand thrusting
its toothy mouth at me in an effort to bite my fingers. It was
slimy and its sharp bones dug into my skin. I threw it with all
my strength against a wall. It flopped to the ground as if it
was dead. But then I heard the sickening snapping of bones as
its ribs shattered and its stomach burst open. Out of the blood
and guts spewed about twenty new creatures. They all joined in
the attack." |
