“Wake up you lazy cretins,”
squawked Elizabeth. “There are strange beasts in our woods.”
Alice raised her head a little and opened one bloodshot eye.
“Get lost you big mummy’s girl,” she shrieked.
“Yeah go and make a nest with the pretty things,” said Hannah.
Alice and Hannah were lying in the nest the three girls had
built out of branches. It wasn’t a particularly comfortable nest
but it was home. And Alice and Hannah had no intention of
leaving it—not for anything.
“Come on. Come on,” shrieked Elizabeth. “You two never do
nothing no more.”
“It’s fun just watching the clouds go by,” said Alice.
“Or watching the trees grow,” added Hannah.
“And what about the strange beasts?” asked Elizabeth. “Are you
two going to lie back and let any old young thing trespass on
our property?”
“Are they ugly beasts?” asked Hannah.
“No. They’re very pretty little things,” said Elizabeth.
“Oh well,” Hannah yawned. “I guess we’d better go kill them.”
Alice and Hannah hopped out of the nest onto nearby branches and
stretched their repulsive wings.
“Let’s make this quick,” said Alice. “There’s a nice black cloud
coming along and I want to watch it float by.” |
